Tips on making your first Makeup Geek order

Makeup Geek is a wonderfully brilliant brand. The quality is right up there with high end makeup if not better yet you don’t feel ripped off or like the makeup items are way overpriced. I can literally hear heavenly music play.

Yes the lip products and highlighters aren’t as affordable as the eye shadows BUT they come in packaging unlike the shadows which are pressed in a metal pan – they are still reasonably priced.

In today’s post I am strictly talking about the eyeshadows as I have yet to try other products (though I plan to) but also if you are yet to try the makeup geek eyeshadows you’ll know just how overwhelming it can be. There are so many gorgeous shades to choose from the indecision can cause you to pass out. I procrastinated buying their shadows for so long because I simply did not know where to begin.

So here I am going to share advice to you guys making your first makeup geek order of eye shadows. Hopefully, any fan of Makeup Geek will find some use in this post. I haven’t included swatches because I have a dedicated Makeup geek swatch post with ALL the shades I own in the works …. so watch this space for that

So let’s jump in!

  1. Stay within your comfort zone shade wise

Obviously when first delving into a product that offers many shades whether it’s eye shadow or lipstick or even blush. You’re going to first pick out the shads you know you are going to use a lot! If you are obsessed with warm tones then pick out warm tones. If you prefer cool tones then select those. I also found that choosing shades that both worked for everyday eye shadow looks as well as glam eye shadow looks was the best move. I knew that if I only picked the subtle shades, I’d have nothing to wear when I wanted to go glam. The same applies if you pick the intense glam shades, when you want a simple eye look you won’t have much.

  1. Lid shades, crease shades and transition shades.

If you want to get enough eye shadows your first time to be able to create many different eye shadow looks I find breaking it down into these three main categories helps. Firstly lid shades which are the eye shadows you would want to wear on your lid. Then, crease shades which I recommend to be matte as shimmery shades in the crease don’t always work an often make the eye look appear messy and unblended. Thirdly, transition shades which are the subtle shades you’d apply in your crease area and just over to help blend your overall eyeshadow look. I personally bought only lid shades and one transition shade in my first order. I felt that in particular I was lucking really good and pigmented lid shades in my collection. But if you hit all three of those categories you’ll be able to create many eye shadow looks with your first order. As a bonus if you are looking for base shades to set your eye shadow primer with and kind of work as a transition shade you could add a few of those if you’d like. Depending on how many you’ve selected in the other 3 categories.

For lid shades I recommend – Legend, Grandstand, In the spot light, Goddess, Cinderella and Starry eyed.

For crease shades I recommend – Sidekick, Tan Lines, Latte, Coco bear, Cherry cola, Bitten and Frappe.

For transition shades I definitely recommend – Tuscan sun, Cream Bruelee’ and Bake sale

And for base shades / sort of work as a transition shade I recommend – Peach smoothie, beaches and cream and vanilla bean.

  1. Write down all the shades you want to buy regardless if it’s a lot. Break it down into several orders

When I did this, yes the list was large. But the beauty of this is regardless of how many shadows there are you can split it into reasonably sized orders. In your first order you’ll obviously be buying a Z palette so depending on how much you are willing to spend you may get less shadows the first time round. Than the remainder of the shades you want you could purchase in the next order or split it into another two. My first wave of makeup geek shadows I split over three orders, the second and third being much bigger.

I’ve even currently made a new list as after my color pop pressed shadow order which involved a deal where you get a free empty palette for each order. I took the foam out which allowed me to fit 10 shadows per palette. Because my first order gave me 6 free empty palettes and my second color pop order left me with 2 free empty palettes (they had restricted it to 2 by then) I basically had 48 remaining spots for eye shadow. As I adore makeup geek I am planning to fill those spots with makeup geek shadows. So my new list contains 48 shadows which I will be splitting into two orders. I currently own 62 makeup geek shadows which as I mentioned above I split into three orders. You could buy 5-6 shades at a time if it’s easier for you.

  1. Z palettes

Knowing what z palette you want to get can be tricky. If you get a very small one and fill it up but then want more shadows you’ll have to buy another Z palette. I knew from the beginning that I was going to want A LOT of the shadows so I purchased the extra-large Z palette which fits 5 rows of eye shadow, 7 shadows in each role. So 35 eye shadows will fit in a extra-large z palette

A large z palette will fit about 27 shades. I believe a medium z palette fits about 15 eye shadows and the small Z palette fits 9 eye shadows. Now if the list you created of all the shades you want is a large list. Let’s say 30 shades. Then you are better off buying the extra-large palette even if you have 5 spots left, you’ll eventually find shades you also want. Even if in your first makeup geek order you only buy 10 eye shadows, getting the extra-large palette is beneficial as once you pay for the empty palette you can fill it up with the shadows bit by bit.

And that wraps up this long post. These tips I share are of course just my opinion. There are no rules with how you buy makeup. I just find the beautifully tragic thing about makeup geek is that you see all the shades and it overwhelms you because you want everything. I know for me it made me procrastinate buying from them for years. Have you guys tried makeup geek? What shades are you loving? What tips do you have for those yet to order their shadows? Drop a comment and let’s get talking. I hope you guys all have a fantastic day and I’ll see you in the next post.

Oh girl once you enter the land of custom made eyeshadow palettes – it’s an addiction of its own. The amount of makeup geek and color pop single shadows I own – isn’t funny. If colour pop still launched more single shadows I’d still be picking them up as well, they focus more on palettes now.

Staying within your comfort zone for the first order sounds like great advice, as it’s the best chance of avoiding disappointment! I usually opt for neutral shades and warm metallics 🙂 Hope you have a lovely weekend!

Exactly once you’ve more comfortable with a product or a brand than it’s easier to mix things up. I didn’t get any colourful shades till my third order. Yes! Neutrals are the best and they’re all so different (at least that’s what I tell myself) – I just can’t get enough with eye shadow lately.

I haven’t ordered from them in ages, ever since colour pop came out with their powder shadows (and their constant launches) but I’m definitely in need of another order. Their shadows are amazing.

I was looking at buying Makeup Geek shadows a while back, but for some reason I can’t remember held off! While I want to eventually try the shadows, Colourpop has that great deal of buying four singles and getting an empty palette for free, so unless I find something at Makeup Geek that I can’t find at Colourpop… which actually might not be that hard – Makeup Geek offers a huge selection!

The two brands are distinctive with their eye shadows. I’m happy hoarding both haha and Makeup geek does have the larger shade range as they’ve been around longer. The shade range is so large it put me off for so long from buying for them. I highly recommend the Makeup geek foiled shadows – they’re amazing.

I love Makeup Geek, I remember placing my first order a few years back. I only bought two or three colours, but that wasn’t the end of it! Very soon I fell in love and ordered a ton of them, their mattes and foiled shadows in particular are just dreamy! I love your shade recommendations, will have to check them out xx

It was the same with me. My first order only included 7 shades and then I did another two massive ones very soon after! I definitely plan to order more I’ve been very distracted ever since colour pop launched the powder shadows I got distracted haha. It’s time I get back on the makeup geek band wagon.

Exactly I mean i’m all for experimenting with makeup and going outside the comfort zone but with the context of figuring out what Makeup geek shadows you want to purchase first – it’s good to pick shades within the comfort zone. I mean the shade range is so stinking large it can be overwhelming.

I know what you mean with the addiction, I recently ordered single eyeshadows from Colourpop and as soon as I opened the package, I knew I would want every single shade available!!! I haven’t tried anything from Makeup Geek but you are making me want to so bad!!

I have that same addiction with color pop as well. I own most of their single shades. I’m loving their palettes as well but I wish they came out with more single shadows. I miss collecting them haha. I’m also overdue for a makeup geek order, I need more shades from them as well.

Makeup Geek is one of the brands that I always think I want to try some day, but never do as it is not readily available in Germany and buying online is just so overwhelming. I don’t really need more eyeshadows, but your tips are very helpful.

I mean I am not mad at their wide range but when you are purchasing from them for the first time it’s so overwhelming because you want so many shades but realistically you can’t shuffle out hundreds of dollars on it in one go. Breaking it up into small orders is the way to go!

I totally agree that it can feel so overwhelming trying to choose the right shades from Makeup Geek! It’s difficult enough trying to do that with MAC shades and just about everyone has access to a MAC store to at least swatch the colours in person, and we all know trying to decide on something based on the online swatches is a lot more difficult. Also that’s crazy you own 62 Makeup Geek shadows – but very impressive! I’ve only ordered twice from MUG and just don’t feel super confident about choosing shades based on the swatches, and I really want to try some pressed shadows from ColourPop as well but haven’t yet because I’m not sure which ones to get.

I know and it’s easy to pout because you truly just want all the shades all at once but something I have been teaching myself with makeup purchasing over the last year – is to pace myself. it’s okay to do small orders a bit more frequently rather than saving up for ages for a massive order and then going months without purchasing. Moderation times my makeup addiction much better. I highly reccomend colour pop shadows as well! Between these two brands you really don’t need to go high end with eye shadows. (So I told myself but in the last 4 months I’ve started getting into high end eye shadows as well & let’s just say the flood gates have opened.

I’m happy to recommend you a list of color pop shadows to get. Also they have launched so many palettes so if you want to test out their quality, maybe start with a palette so you get a feel for their shadows. x

It definitely is a remarkable eyeshadow brand. It’s definitely made me rule out a bunch of high-end eyeshadow palettes. Now I only go for the few that really appeal to me!
