Best Makeup Discoveries of 2018

DISCLAIMER: This blog post comes with a warning! Due to its great length, make sure you have sufficient water and snacks nearby!

Yes guys it’s that long by the time you finish reading it, it could be 2019! That’s what you get when you ask a makeup hoarder to talk about the best makeup discoveries she made in 2018 – and guys there was a lot I didn’t include because I’d have to publish a freaking novel to get through it all.

So hold onto your drink and snacks and let’s get the ball rolling!

Huda ‘Obsessions’ Palettes

Huda is one brand I’ve definitely fallen in love with this year! I wasn’t expecting to either – I’malways going to be a drugstore gal at heart and usually I am super strategicwith what products I go high end for …. Usually. But the Huda beauty eye shadowformula is so freaking good! It’s pigmented AF, smooth with minimal fall out (thoughyou notice fall out with some of the darker shades). What gets me most is howlong wearing the shadows are, I’m very lazy and forgetful when it comes to eyeshadow primer (I don’t really have longevity issues with eye shadow) but the huda shadows definitely stand out as long wearing to me. The palettes are alsocompact, not too expensive and there are a lot of shade combo varieties.

Too faced hangover setting spray

My love for Too Faced has gone from 0-100 this year! Prior to 2018 I only owned the beloved born this way foundation & now I own so many products from them, including this awesome setting spray. I own quite a lot of setting sprays and usually I’m notfussy – if it settles down the powdery look and keeps my makeup lasting longer(without ruining my foundation) – I’m happy! This setting spray is a stand out in my collection because it’s so freaking hydrating! It’s actually the most hydrating setting spray that I’ve ever tried. I love wearing it underneath foundation when I know I’m wearing a foundation with a dry-ish formula (especially thosewinter months) and also on top if I need an extra boost. It hydrates and plumps the skin and just gives your skin all the moisture without causing your foundation to slip off your face.

Makeup revolution ‘Conceal & define’ Concealer

I have been a LONG TIME fan of makeup revolution – that is no secret! But this was the year I finally got back into it after 2 years + of not ordering anything from them. They have definitely stepped up their game even more and this concealer proves it! I usually stay clear of their base products because I’m fussy BUT this concealer is so hyped and talked about and I can clearly see why! A killershade range, killer coverage, doesn’t cake up under the eyes, you get a lot ofproduct (and they’ve also launched a super-size version) and It’s AFFORDABLE(like so affordable how can you not purchase it). I love everything about itand I’ve already purchased several back ups!

Maybelline angel push up mascara

I have loved Maybelline mascaras for YEARS! So it should be no surprise that one has been included in this list! This mascara has a wacky wand and by wacky I mean it’sso simple with literally just a couple or bristles on one side … and that’s it! It gives so much lift, length and oomph to my lashes without making them clumplike a mofo! Maybelline is the QUEEN of mascaras. |REVIEW|

Makeup revolution ‘reloaded’ eye shadow palettes

Another magical makeup revolution discovery, following my dive back into the brand is the reloaded palettes. To discover a brand that is only $7 AUD and is so freaking good blows my mind! The shades are pigmented, smooth, blendable and just awesome. They work so well, last pretty well on the eyes (an eyeshadow primer will take them even further). I’m just shook at these palettes and their shade ranges are so awesome. 10/10 would recommend!

Wet n wild ‘MegaGlo’ Highlighter powder

So my highlighter collection may have literally tripled in size this year – don’t judge me haha!I’ve also become slightly more flexible with how I like my highlight (meaning I don’t just layer everything with Becca highlighters anymore – are you guys proud). When I first tried this highlighter I was like cool but not crazy glowy(I blame the awful lighting in my room). Fast forward a few uses later I made myself wear this highlighter WITHOUT layering it with something more intense& I stick with it. Throughout the day as I wore it, I kept glancing in the mirror and noticed the glow and every time … yes that same highlighter my judgemental ass labelled  this highlighter as “okay”. To sum it up – this highlighter is goooooood!

Lancome ‘teint idol ultra-wear’ foundation

Another thing I have started to hoard like crazy … foundations! I mean I was a foundation hoarder from way back but I’ve kind of discovered a lot of boujee ones because that’sone area of high-end makeup I think is worth it! (Even though I still love lots of drugstore foundations). Anywho before discovering this foundation, I didn’t believe light coverage bases that were super long lasting actually existed. This foundation definitely debunks that myth! This foundation looks supernatural, lasts all day and it feels as if you have nothing on the skin –literally nothing. Lancôme I love you but my bank account doesn’t!

It cosmetics CC cream

Not only is this product constantly talked about but it’s one of those products that for those who love it – go through countless tubes & keep repurchasing it. When a beauty junky repurchases a product that much – you know it’s gotta be good! I was a little nervous as I know many with oilier skin types that rave about this& this dry skin gal wasn’t sure she could make it work – but this stuff is magic. It has way more coverage than your typical CC cream, it still looks natural and lasts so well. Hello holy grail that I’ll repurchase forever!

Pixi ‘Matte Last’ liquid lipsticks *

I’m not a liquid lipstick love and I LOVE these liquid lipsticks. So that clearly tells you these bad boys are some kind of voodoo magic! They are pigmented and creamy, comfy on the lips, the shades are delicious (with so many nude options), they aren’t too expensive and they are just everything you could want. They also last stupidly long and remain comfy on the lips the whole time! I gave my mama a couple and now she’s obsessed too!

Josie Maran ‘Argan oil Vibrancy’ foundation

Yes another foundation, no it’s not the last one. This particular one landed itself on my wishlist ever since the day Jaclyn Hill started raving about it. It took me 2 years to finally stop procrastinating and pick it up – boy was it worth. It’s super nourishing, hydrating and just luxe on the skin (giving you a super healthy dewy look), it also packs an awesome amount of coverage and lasts so well on the skin AND blends out easily and sits on the skin (and actually looks like skin!). This one gets 2 thumbs up for me.

Too faced ‘Gingerbread spice’ palette

A super duper new one, I literally ordered it the day it released in early November after patiently waiting 2 months. As soon as I saw this palette I knew I had to have it – I wascompletely and utterly in love! The shade range is gorgeous, unusual, wearableand just awesome + that cute packaging AND I hadn’t tried any too faced eyeshadow palettes before so call me curious!

Urban decay ‘Naked Heat’ & ‘Naked Cherry’ palette

Two other palettes that are extremely new purchases. The naked heat palette I finally picked up after eyeing it for so long. I’m a warm tone junkie (stating the obvious here) and it took me so long to get it. The naked cherry is a new-ish release and I also recently picked it up because when it comes to trying new brands or (a new category from a brand) I go from 0-100. They are pigmented and so easy to work with so I’m super happy to have picked these two up!

Anastasia Beverley Hills ‘soft glam’ Palette

The amount of hype ABH palettes receive had me curious to try out one of their palettes for ages but most of their shade ranges didn’t overly appeal to me. So when ‘Soft glam’ was released it was the perfect palette to start with and allow me to try their eye shadow formula. I can happily report the ABH eye shadow formula is so good I could literally cry. Their shadows are more buttery than actual butter but still a powder shadow. They blend so well, glide onto the eye and guys they are just so good I’m actually speechless …. Me speechless? Someone look out the window to see if pigs are flying.

Mac double gleam highlighter (extra dimensions skin finish) *

I didn’t have luck with the original mac mineralized skin finish highlighters. They were only okay to me (and definitely not glowy enough!). Then, I got lucky enough to try the double gleam highlighter (an underrated one) and fell in love. This highlighter has a gel to powder and glides onto the skin giving you a wet sheen to the skin– super glowy but still natural! I have been super impressed with this one!

Too faced ‘born this way’ full coverage concealer

I adore the born this way foundation! Like ‘take with me on a stranded island’ adore! So when this concealer came out, I bolted to pick it up. Prior to this concealer, only tarte shape tape was the ‘full coverage’ concealer in my collection that I could wear under the eyes. This too faced concealer has now joined the ranks! It has quite a lot of coverage but has a light, weightless formula that sits so well under the eyes. I love that it comes with a big ass dome applicator and you get 15 ml of product. It’s also quite comparable to shape tape but I love both! The shadrange does lean on the warm side so I know for the extra fair this has been an issue but I love this concealer nevertheless!

Hourglass ‘Translucent veil’ setting powder

Hourglass is another one of those brands I’ve hit hard this year. Prior to 2018 I only owned 1 product and now I own so much! It’s one freaking awesome, luxurious, fancy-pants brand. This setting powder is pure heaven for every dry skin gal out there who has struggled to find a setting powder that doesn’t cake you up but actually sets your foundation – look no further. Plus it gives a pretty glow!

Hourglass ambient lighting blushes

These hourglass blushes are the most gorgeous thing to ever exist! I mean look at them! I always knew I had to have them individually rather than in one of the hourglass palettes – so I picked up 3 (as a little birthday present to myself). What I love about them is they are the easiest blushes to apply – they are sheer but buildable and glide onto the cheeks, giving your face life but not a ticket to clown college. As it’s a sheer formula I went for the bolder shades as the more nude shades had potential to not show up on my skin tone. Blush isn’t something I go high end for usually – but the hourglass ones are 100000% worth it!

Too faced milk chocolate bronzer

My love for bronzer over contouring became a major thing this year – not something I thought would ever happen. I still love contouring don’t get me wrong but most days I opt fora bronze over a contour! This bronzer was a recent-ish addition but the love for it happened instantly! I mentioned earlier that too faced was one of those brands I went crazy for this year and it was no joke – I’m obsessed. I thought this bronzer would be too light for me but it’s perfect and so easy to use and apply without it looking funky on the skin! It also doesn’t hurt that the packaging looks stunning!

YSL Touche Eclat’ Blurring gel primer

Boujee primers were another thing I got into this year … it hasn’t been the best year for my bank account, let’s just get that out of the way. I basically had an epiphany where I was like “I haven’t found any primers that I’m crazy about – being that I only tried drugstore primers. So I thought why not go high end … the rest was history. Don’t get me wrong I have quite a few drugstore primers that I enjoy but none that helped me with the stubborn foundations in my collection. Anywho, regarding this primer it has a silicone gel texture but it doesn’t pill upon the skin, cause foundation to slide and break up. It has this subtle“greasy” texture that allows your foundation to glide on and look super smooth. It gives you a subtle glow too and just makes those full coverage, stubborn foundations apply so much nicer and your complexion looks very smooth and flawless. This primer is a major winner!

Ofra Highlighters

Being that I’m into crazy blinding highlighters – how could I not try the infamous Ofrahighlighters?! I don’t know what took me so long seeing as these things are the bomb! The glow is so intense, aliens from space will see your highlight! You do want to make sure you apply a tiny amount – too much, will leave it looking unblended. And while the shade can look dark in the pan, my fair skin still is able to use them. I own the shades “rodeo drive” and “glazed doughnut”.

Smashbox Primerizer primer

I mentioned earlier how I took the plunge into high-end primers this year (many more than what I’ve included in this post), out of all the hydrating high-end primers I’ve tried –this is 10000000% the best. Hands down my favourite hydrating primer of all time. It has a gel moisturizer consistency but it’s so much more than just a gel moisturizer. It hydrates & plumps the skin like crazy without being sticky, your foundation goes on nicely and looks fresh, and looks fresh for longer. Every time I’ve used this primer I’ve had people compliment me on my skin. This stuff is the bees-knees!

Hourglass ambient lighting bronzer

I did mention how crazy I am about bronzers so how could I not get the hourglass bronzer?! I’m quite picky with my bronzer, it needs to be sheer but buildable and give me awash of colour with no room for messing up. I do feel like this bronzer is a teeny bit too pale for me but I’m still able to make it work. It’s so freaking good you guys, so easy to work with. To you pale gals out there, if you are struggling to find a bronzer to work with your skin tone – look no further!

L’Oreal Paris ‘Pro Glow’ Foundation

This foundation took ages to come to Australia, but when it did everyone pounced. L’Oreal makes quality foundations and while some of them don’t agree with my skin and end up looking powdery – this one was a winner. As I write this post, I’m wearing it on my face. It gives you a super fresh, lit from within look. Your face looks healthy, radiant and glowy without a fake kind of glow which can leave you looking kind of sweaty. It also packs a medium coverage which is super nice and lasts well!

DB cosmetics ‘Hydrating & Luminous’ Foundation

Another dewy foundation from a well-loved Aussie brand is the Designer brands cosmetics ‘hydrating and luminous’ foundation! This stuff is super dewy … and hydrating (as the name suggests). Your complexion looks healthy, hydrated and very very glowy. This is a little tricky to wear in the summer months as it can cross the line from glowy to sweaty but I also love to mix it with some other foundations are on the matte side. It’s not the longest wearing but you can get a 7-8 hour wear if you set it with powder … a setting spray and primer would be handy too!

Benefit ‘Bad gal bang’ Mascara

I’m quite content withdrugstore mascaras so I often don’t crave picking up the more pricey ones. Butwhen this benefit mascara launched and I saw it on everyone’s lashes – I had tohave it. I could also tell by the look of the wand that I’d love this mascara so I thought, eh why not! This stuff gives major length to the lashes but alsoa lot of lift and of course volume! What I love is it doesn’t weight the lashesdown, some mascaras while giving you lots of volume make it quite difficult foryour lashes to hold a curl. This mascara doesn’t do that, your lashes looklong, wispy, full and just awesome.

Claudia Schiffer ‘Super Long lash’ Mascara *

A brand I was lucky enough to try via PR allowed me to discover one awesome mascara. Since discovering this mascara I’ve been using it A Lot! My lashes look so full andpack so much more oomph with this mascara and I just know my lashes are goingto look super dramatic!

L’Oreal Paris ‘Lash paradise’ Mascara

And another mascara! This one has been labelled a dupe for the Too faced ‘better than sex’ mascara.I’ve tried a dupe of the too faced one and while they are comparable I actually prefer the L’Oreal Paris one. This packs a crazy amount of volume for the lashes, they instantly look thicker, fuller and just like you have gone a lot more lashes. The formula is slightly on the heavy side so it can make it difficult to hold a curl but I love it none the less! |Review|

Huda Beauty ‘Faux Filter’ Foundation

I mentioned earlier that Huda beauty has been one brand I’ve been obsessed with! So naturally, I had to try the foundation because I love foundations, especially full coverage ones! This stuff takes ‘full coverage’ to another level!! It’s packed with so much pigment, it can be a little tricky blending it out because you still want your skin to look like skin …. Just flawless skin. It works well on drier skintypes (though a hydrating primer will always be welcomed) and it lasts verywell throughout the day. This foundation does have a rep for causing breakouts if you wear it many days in a row – but I rotate my foundations often and bounce around so this hasn’t caused me to break out.

Benefit ‘hoola lite’ Bronzer

I’ve lost count of how many bronzers I’ve talked about in today’s post. This bronzer is the sister bronzer to the original hoola bronzer which I’ve long since wanted to try. But my pale ass knew that at most the original bronzer would work as a contour shade for me and I’m all about the bronzing life now (well mostly). This bronzer is sheer, super easy to use and blend out and it really works so well with my fair skin. I’m not crazy about the boxy packaging but the bronzer itself is awesome … and that’s what matters!

Kat Von D ‘Shade and light’ Contour Kit

While I have gone on and on about how I’m all about the bronzer life – I haven’t quit contouring, I just don’t do it daily like I use to. BUT while reducing my contour kit collection to my favourites I wanted to go high-end for one kit and I chose the Kat von D one (despite the controversy) because this was one of the most raved about contour kits (one I’ve seen many people purchase again and again too!). The shades in this kit are so easy to work with, they are buildable and you can adjust the depth of your contour depending on which shade you bounce your brush into – I like to dip my brush into the 2 lighter shades. The highlight shades are also super versatile, they are great for sweeping underneath the contour, setting & highlighting under the eyes and even setting eyeshadow primer. The powders are buttery and blend like a dream and I’m a fan of this palette!

Benefit ‘Blush Barr’ Palette (Limited edition)

This palette has got to be the best bargain of 2018! Apparently, this is a yearly tradition from Becca to launch a palette filled with 5 full sized products. This is the first time I’ve purchased one and I’m stoked with the products inside. I have a full size of the original hoola bronzer (which I use as a contour shade) and 4 gorgeous blushes. Altogether the products are valued at $250 but the palette retails at $99. An absolute bargain! And I get 5 of their products in the one palette rather than individually in their usual boxy packaging – it’s a win-win! The blushes are sheer but buildable and give a beautiful glow!

Becca ‘Be a light’ Palette

Prior to this palette, I owned 3 other Becca face palettes (the Jaclyn hill face palette, the Chrissy tiegan face palette and the Apri ski palette). I didn’t reach for them as much as I should so I told myself that I wouldn’t buy anymore palettes. Then Becca went and dropped this stunning palette which was so different to their other palettes and had major hourglass vibes to it. I still tried to resist but during a 20% sale on Sephora, I folded like a cheap suit! I can easily say this is my favourite from all the Becca palettes! The powders are sheer but buildable and all the shades are unique and don’t repeat across the palettes. The blush is gorgeous and so easy to use (compared to their other blushes which I don’t like much). I just can’t say enough good things about this palette!

Violet Voss ‘Holy grails’ Palette

Last but definitely not least is this stunner of a palette. It’s no secret that I’m crazy for warm-toned palettes and this one is the mother of warm-toned palettes and appropriately named “holy grails” it has a both warm & cranberry vibe to it and every single shade is pigmented AF, blendable and so easy to work with. I sometimes just stare at this palette lovingly because it looks so freaking gorgeous.

Pixi peach corrector – Brightening peach *

Prior to discovering this product, I used red lipstick under the eyes as a corrector – Yep that was the situation. I feel like the discolouration I have under the eyes is a serious battle. I’m not talking just dark circles I have a lot of blue/purple veins under there to boot as well! This corrector does an awesome job at helping by under eye situation and it doesn’t cause my concealer to crease, break up or look dry. I’ve purchased a backup and the shade awakening apricot. I use this corrector every single time I wear makeup!

Cover Fx ‘Custom Blot’ Drops

I’ve definitely been on the quest this year to find products of the more mattifying variety. I still love a glowy base but my oily nose / shiny t-zone seem to have their own agenda in mind. What I love about this product is how it feels like a gel moisturizer yet it helps keep the oils of the t-zone at bay. I wouldn’t say on its own it’s enough but when paired with a setting powder and a not so dewy foundation on the t-zone (my t-zone looks fresh all day long). I also like using this product on its own to look less shiny on makeup-free days.

Pixi Glow-Y Gossamer Duo – subtle sunrise *

There is a reason this highlighter duo gets a lot of raves – it’s formula! It has this gel to powder sort of formula that allows your cheek bones to beam without looking powdery or textured. Both shades are super glowy and intense (which is my cup of tea). I do wish the pan sizes were large so I could use my usual highlighter brush but other than that, it’s an awesome highlighter.

And that wraps this novel long blog post. If any of you guys actually stuck the whole way through, I love you! If you guys gave up a quarter way through, I don’t blame you. Tell me in the comments below – what were your best makeup discoveries of 2018?! Asalways I hope you all have a great day and I’ll see you in the next post.

So many great pieces you’ve found this year! Thanks for sharing! 🙂 I really like the sound of that setting spray – I have one I’m using now and it’s really good but it has alcohol in it so I wonder if it would be too drying over winter, I need something like the two faced one! 🙂

Hope that your week is going well 🙂 I had my last day at work yesterday so the Christmas holidays have officially begun here, yey!

There is so much here that I still need to try! Which Huda Obsessions palettes do you recommend? I need to try Lash Paradise and the MUR Reloaded Palettes too, I look at them every time in store and always talk myself out of buying them. I know Sam from Pixiwoo loves the Josie Maran foundation so i think it is really good for dry skin types, alas my skin is oily. Great roundup Bernadette, you have me thinking about what would make mine this year! Have a lovely weekend xx

I don’t have this palette yet but “topaz” has the perfect shade range for those who want to try a Huda palette. It’s the perfect neutrals palette, the other two I recommend are warm and coral (which isn’t as scary as you think). Thank you for stopping by the blog! x
