Medik8 Vitamin A ‘Age-defying’ Retinol Cream

Good morning you gorgeous human beings! So today’s review is exciting! Why because I’m chatting to you about a product that has taken my skincare game to a WHOLE NEW LEVEL! I don’t know why I was afraid of retinol for so long, I think it was because it’s quite a potent ingredient and not something to be taken lightly. But once I phased it in and considering this product is designed for retinol beginners, I fell in love!

No I am going to skip the chatter because we have a lot to talk about in regards to the product itself!

So let’s jump in!

Targeted skin type The product claims to be suitable for all skin types.

What does this product claim? This product claims to be a rejuvenating night cream that fights the signs of ageing, it claims to be a great introductory product for those new to retinol, as it contains 0.2% retinol. It claims to help reduce fine lines, improves elasticity and skin texture, repairs skin while you sleep, decongest pores, regulates sebum production, and promises to leave your skin softer, smoother and more radiant. It’s also cruelty-free, and vegan.

Does it achieve this? I’m only 23 going on 24 so I can’t speak in regards to the wrinkles department just yet. What I will say is the overall complexion of my skin has immensely improved! My skin looks brighter, the areas of pigmentation (from previous breakouts) have faded, texture has improved and overall my skin just looks so much better. This has been the product that has been the icing on the cake for my skin! Let’s just say my obsession with retinol has officially begun.

Packaging: A medium sized tub, where you can scoop the product out.

How much product do you get?: 50 ml

Did it irritate my skin? Retinol is not to be taken lightly, of course, this isn’t prescription strength but it’s a product you are meant to phase in. I followed the instructions and my skin didn’t have a bad reaction. On the nights I use this, I don’t use a chemical exfoliant to ensure I don’t irritate my skin. If you have extremely sensitive skin, tread lightly with retinol.

How many times a week do you use it? When I first started using this, I began using it 2 times a week for 2 weeks, then I began using it every other night for two weeks. Following this, you can graduate to every night, following the first two phases. However, I’ve remained keeping it at every other night for two reasons. I don’t want to run out of it too quickly and the nights I don’t use this product I enjoy using a chemical exfoliant.

Morning or night?: Retinol is to be used in the PM routine (and you must include SPF in your AM routine?)

Why is it necessary to use SPF when using retinol? I’m no expert in this, but in a nutshell – retinol (as well as AHAs/BHAs and Vitamin C) make your skin sensitive to UV/Sun damage (and prone to a sunburn) so even if you aren’t in direct sunlight or it’s in the middle of winter if you are outside for a period of time, your face could get burnt/damaged.

Does your skin adapt to it over time and therefore become less effective?: It hasn’t happened to me yet as I’ve been using it every other night to delay a potential reduction in effectiveness. It’s always possible with retinol, (not a product you’re meant to use every single day forever and ever) and this particular one is designed for skincare newbies. One could always take a break from retinol so their skin gets a break or you can gradually increase to a higher concentration.

Formula: It has a thick, almost whipped consistency but it melts into the skin very easily, it’s quite hydrating, doesn’t feel heavy, greasy and it sinks in quite quickly

Pros: It’s hydrating, not irritating or harsh on the skin, it sinks in quickly, has improved my complexion so much, helped with texture, given radiance to the skin and diminished the dark spots left behind by pimples.

Cons: The tub-like packaging makes it slightly tricky to keep it sanitary but I love that I can use every bit of product up. It’s also not super affordable but after these results, I think it’s worth every scent!

Price: $87 AUD

Availability: Aliveskinhair.com.au, Adore Beauty

Rating: 9.5/10

Overall thoughts: I don’t know much about Retinol as this is literally the first retinol product that I’ve tried but if this product is any indication to go off by, I love it! This product has improved aspects of my skin I didn’t actually notice. My skin is so much more radiant, I’m winning the battle with texture and I’m sure this will help me, in the long run, prevent wrinkles. For everyone who hasn’t tried retinol before, this is the product to try out!

Would I repurchase it? As soon as I start getting low, I’m purchasing a back up!

And that wraps up this post! Have you guys tried any Medik8 skincare or retinol? What were your thoughts? Drop a comment and let’s chat about it! I hope you all have a great day and I’ll see you in the next post.

I love the idea of using retinol in an eye cream. I use eye creams religiously but I think none of us will know if they’re really working until we’re in our 60s! This one sounds great.

I can’t live without retinol, it’s an ingredient that I incorporate into my routine at least 3 times a week.

Sounds lovely – I love anything with retinol! The only thing I worry about with this cream is the packaging – being in a tub and not an airtight container, the retinol might degrade over time? I’d still love to try it!

Yes – tub like packaging has that problem but I get to use every ounce of product and nothing goes to waste. It’s not an intense crazy potent retinol – those are the ones that need very protective packaging.
