Tatcha ‘Silk Canvas’ Protective Primer

Hey, there gorgeous humans! So its review time and we’re going to chat about another cult classic! Hooray! Sometimes I feel like these cult type products that everyone talks about makes it a bit pointless to review – because there is so much content surrounding those products on the net. BUT everyone’s experiences are different, I’ve had “cult products” that I’ve loved and ones that I didn’t like.

I’m also someone who’s very fussy about high end products – if they aren’t game changing, holy grail status – they definitely won’t be repurchased and I’ll tell you exactly my thoughts.

So before I keep on yapping on, shall we get into the review?

Targeted skin type: To a degree, all skin types can benefit from this product. You may want to only apply it on certain areas but I like to apply it all over the face.

What are the claims of this primer?: It claims to instantly blur imperfections, nourish the skin, correct fine lines and look of pores. It has a velvety smooth primer, allows makeup to glide on and last all day and keep shine at bay! Formulated with a protective barrier of botanicals to keep makeup and pollution from affecting the skin or clogging pores. It also has an infusion of pink and gold pearl even out skin tone, and overall contains anti-aging for a youthful glowing complexion.

Does it deliver? It definitely smoothes out the face and makes it appear as though you almost have a filter on the skin. Your skin feels smooth and make does apply quite nicely over it. It’s quite hydrating for a smoothing primer (those types of products typically smooth more over hydrate) BUT with certain foundations that are on their own long-wearing, this primer doesn’t give me enough hydration. It’s filled with lots of skincare friendly ingredients and doesn’t piss off my skin.

Formula: This primer has a balm formula. So it isn’t a loose liquid formula, it melts and smoothes over the skin quite easily and doesn’t feel heavy or make the skin feel greasy. You don’t need to apply too much, it will pill (ball up) if you apply way too much.

Does it boost the wear time of your foundation? I won’t say this primer gives you bullet-proof wear time BUT it does make a difference in how long your foundation stays looking fresh and despite being smoothing it doesn’t cause your foundation to slip off your face.

Does the foundation sit well over this primer? Yes, foundation sits very nicely over this primer, it doesn’t break apart, slide off or look textured or cakey, and your overall complexion looks very smooth.

What foundations do I like to pair with this primer? I like to pair all kinds of foundations with this primer! I do have a particular few in my collection that sometimes don’t sit smoothly on my skin and I like to specifically make sure to use Tacha silk canvas with them. It Cosmetics CC cream, Bare Minerals complexion rescue, and Smashbox studio skin are among those I love to pair with this primer.

Finish: It has a natural finish, slightly mattifying but not really.

Packaging?: The packaging is a slim tub which has the balmy product on the inside. It comes with a pick to help you scoop out the product.

How much product are you given? 20 grams

Price: $80 AUD

Availability: Mecca Beauty, Tatcha site, Sephora US

Pros: Smoothes out the complexion and makes you look filtered, gives the skin some hydration and nourishment, sits so well underneath foundation.

Cons: It’s quite easy to lose the small pick that comes with it to scoop up the product, and when you use your fingers it’s hard to keep the product sanitary. Also if you apply too much it can pill on the skin.

Rating: 8/10

Overall thoughts: I really do like this primer, my skin looks so smooth, it plays with foundation very well and my overall complexion looks smooth, filtered and flawless! I don’t know if this is my favorite smoothing primer of all time, I’ve been trying out quite a few high-end ones to find my absolute favorite. I have a feeling this primer is going to grow on me and I’m going to like it more and more. I want to start using it on no makeup days as well just to bring some smoothing and blurring to my complexion and because it’s packed with lots of skincare friendly goodies I can do that without worrying about it breaking me out.

Would I repurchase it?: A big big maybe!

And that wraps up this review! Have you guys tried this product from Tatcha? Or any other Tatcha products? What did you think? Were you a fan? Drop a comment and let’s chat! I hope you all have a great day, I love you guys and I’ll see you in the next post.

I was surprised how much I liked this when I tried the few samples I had! I actually would consider buying it too – I’m a maybe like you. It’s far less “gimmicky” than I expected it would be. Lovely review as usual!

I’ve tried a couple Tatcha products but honestly I wasn’t blown away. I think there are better products available at more reasonable prices. I loved your thorough review though!

It’s definitely an insanely expensive brand, this has been the only product that appealed to me – I definitely couldn’t justify the price of the dewy skin mist. x
