Smashbox ‘Photo Finish’ Primerizer

Hey, there beautiful humans!

I could chit chat and jabber for the sake of making a lengthy introduction or I could keep it short and to the point. I’m choosing option B today because today’s review is on a product I absolutely adore and I can’t wait to tell you guys about it.

So let’s get started straight away!

Targeted skin type: Dry skin types will absolutely adore this primer as well as normal-dehydrated. I have a dehydrated skin type with an oily t-zone (so technically combo). Combo to oily skin types could enjoy this primer, most likely during the winter months.

What is the purpose of this primer? Claims to be Ultra-light-weight and deliver 24-hour moisture and increase the skin’s moisture levels by “127%” whilst acting as a makeup magnet to lock down the foundation. It also promises to be non-greasy and fast-absorbing.

Does it deliver? Oh yes, it does! This primer has got to be my all-time favourite hydrating primer. I have not tried anything that provides this amount of hydration and also doesn’t make the foundation slide around. It doesn’t make me look oily and it feels so light-weight on the skin.

Formula: The formula is light-weight, thin (almost a cross between a gel moisturizer and a serum). It smoothes around the skin super easy and doesn’t feel overly sticky but it gives you enough tackiness to keep the foundation from sliding around. It doesn’t pill (ball up) on the skin or cause the foundation to layer funny.

Does it boost the wear time of your foundation? Considering the intense level of hydration this primer provides, it doesn’t cause your foundation to slide around, break apart or make you look super oily. It keeps your makeup looking fresher for longer (I won’t say this is the go-to primer for longevity) but I do notice a difference.

Does the foundation sit well over this primer? Yes! It’s light-weight and thin formula allows the foundation to easily layer over it and the primer actually allows the foundation to blend easier. If you have dry patches, this primer can help make them appear less obvious.

What foundations do I like to pair with this primer? Because I adore this primer and don’t just want to use it with just any foundation, I save it for the ones that are slightly drying for my skin. Ps. This primer also wouldn’t be necessary with dewy foundations (since dewy foundations are always super hydrating). I particularly love this primer with the Smashbox studio skin 15-hour wear foundation, the Huda beauty Faux filter foundation, the L’Oreal Paris stay fresh 24-hour wear foundation as well as the It Cosmetics CC cream, Bare minerals complexion rescue gel and the Lancôme teint idol ultra-wear foundation. Those last 3 foundations I usually pair with this particular primer in the winter months.

Finish: Your skin just looks hydrated and juicy. This primer isn’t mattifying nor is it illuminating/metallic.

Packaging?: Glass bottle with a pump. The packaging is identical to the Studio skin 15-hour wear foundation but with a different colour.

How much product are you given? 30 ml

Price: $64 AUD

Availability: Mecca, Sephora US, Smashbox cosmetics site, Ulta, Boots

Pros: Incredibly hydrating, light-weight, sinks in quickly, doesn’t cause your foundation to break apart or slide around, and it doesn’t make you look greasy. It also helps keep your makeup looking fresher for longer.

Cons: A little pricey and with the pump packaging, once it stops pumping out the product it will be hard getting out every ounce of product.

Rating: 10/10

Overall thoughts: I don’t throw around 10s lightly when reviewing a product as you guys will now but this product is pure heaven. I feel like so many brands come out with “hydrating” primers and while they feel nice they aren’t hydrating enough. With my skin type it’s quite easy for me to have foundation look dry and cakey (as it’s only my t-zone that’s oily). So any primer that can allow my foundation to not look dry and crusty is good in my books. In fact, if I had to choose just one primer (in a scenario where I could only use one – this would be it). I can always go with a long-wearing foundation if I need my makeup to be absolutely bulletproof but hydration (without looking greasy) isn’t easy to come by. This is one primer to check out!

Would I repurchase it?: Hell to the yes!

And that wraps up this gushy post. It’s not often I basically drool over a product but when you have been trying primers left right and centre from every price point and finally discover one that delivers on its hydration promises – you know it’s a keeper! Have you guys tried this glorious primer? What primers have you been loving? Drop a comment and let me know! I hope you all have a great day and I’ll see you in the next post.

My favourite hydrating primer by far is by Marc Jacobs but now you got me intrigued with this. I mean 10/10 is a huge deal!

I adore that marc jacobs coconut primer but that one gives me more glow so I pair it with only matte foundations. This primer gives me hydration without any greasyness.

127% increase is quite a bit of a claim there! The fact that you rated it a 10 says it all to me, I need to try it!

It’s definitely an extreme claim and while I can’t test down claim right down to the science, I will say compared to other hydrating primers, it actually does make a massive difference in hydration.
