Laura Mercier ‘Oil-free’ Tinted Moisturizer | A cult classic that just didn’t work for me!

When it comes to cult classic products that have been raved about for years you low-key believe the odds will be in your favor. After all, if so many people swear by a product over many years (in a time where it rains new makeup launches 24-7) it’s got to be good! BUT it doesn’t always work out that way especially with base products.

So I’m going to chat today about a product that just didn’t work out for me.

Let’s get started

What are the claims of this product?

This product claims to be a multi-tasking moisturizer that delivers a natural demi-matte hint of color while hydrating the skin and helping control excess oil throughout the day.

Do they deliver?

It’s definitely on the matte side and coverage is very sheer. It is quite a long-wearing base BUT I don’t find it hydrating. It doesn’t sit well on my skin, I find it looks very noticeable and for something light coverage I want it to look effortless.

Formula / Pigmentation / Longevity?

The formula is quite fluid and spreads onto the skin easily and blends out quickly. It’s very light coverage and lasts well. It isn’t hydrating so if your skin is on the dry/dehydrated side your skin will look very dry.

It applies fairly easily as it’s quite a thin formula BUT it requires a lot of effort to get it to look like skin. I find that it sits on top of my skin rather than blends into it to look natural. Perhaps I need to apply it with my hands (but I just don’t apply foundation with my hands). Your skin also needs to be in tip-top condition for it to look good and considering the price point I don’t like having to work hard to get it to look good; it should be an effortless type of everyday base.

Shade range?

The tinted moisturizer comes in 13 shades – not bad for a light coverage base (they are normally very limited on shade range).

Squeezy tube packaging

How much does it cost?

$74 AUD

How much product do you get?

50 ml (nearly double the typical amount you get in a foundation).

Where to purchase it?

Mecca cosmetica, Adore beauty, Laura Mercier website

Who might not like this? Who would like this

If you have a drier skin type, like me this tinted moisturizer may sit awkwardly on top of your skin. Perhaps this product just doesn’t agree with my skin type even though I can usually make matte bases work for me (and normally prefer a matte foundation). If you have an oilier skin type this may work for you.

Overall thoughts?

This isn’t for me. I have other light coverage + matte bases that work better for me and look like skin. Perhaps those on the extra oily side would prefer this, even though it’s a cult favorite I just can’t get it to look nice and I have a lot of other options that work better.

Would I recommend this to you / repurchase

I would give this a pass. I prefer the It cosmetics CC cream and the bare minerals complexion rescue over this. Plus for a tinted moisturizer, I prefer mixing my La roche posay tinted SPF 50 with my Pixi moisturizer which works way better!

That wraps up this review! Have you tried a cult favorite makeup product that just didn’t work for you? I do believe with effort, you can make even those average products work BUT when you have so many base options that you adore it doesn’t make sense to ignore them over something that takes a lot of work. Thanks for hanging out with me in this post, I will see you all next time. x B

I love light coverage bases as much as a fuller coverage but if it doesn’t sit nicely on my skin and look like skin – it’s not for me unfortunately.

Oh no such a shame it didn’t work! I don’t think this would work for me either. I prefer a dewier base and I have dry skin so I need something super hydrating. I usually like tinted moisturisers but will definitely give this a miss xx

This definitely doesn’t have any dewyness to it. The chantecaille just skin may be more for you, because it’s light fresh and glowy.

As soon as I read matte and sheer, I knew this wouldn’t be for me. Sorry to hear it hasn’t worked for you either, I’ll definitely be giving this a miss xx

Funny enough, all my holygrail base products are matte BUT because of my dehydrated skin with an oily t-zone I always make sure my primer is hydrating, I follow up with setting spray and add glow to my skin in other ways. I just find dewy bases look good in the beginning then when combined with my oil AF nose I look like melted ice cream 🙁

Ooh! Thanks for the honest review, I don’t think I’ve ever read anything less than glowing review for Laura Mercier as a brand and so this has been genuinely helpful. I’ve often wondered about Laura Mercier’s translucent powder… do let me know if you’d ever tried that, and how you got on?! Have a lovely week ahead! x

You’re very welcome. Everyone’s experiences vary and what didn’t work for me may work for you. My skin is picky with what foundations it likes because I have texture I find that if a foundation doesn’t look fairly smooth on my skin it isn’t for me. I have tried that powder! It’s very Matte but with a setting spray it’s nice, I don’t use it under the eyes because I now 100% only use the fenty beauty lavender setting powder to set concealer every time I wear makeup, so all my other powders are for the face now.

I use a lot of Laura Mercier products but this also does not work for me. Thanks for your review! I use her Creme Smooth foundation instead.

I just feel like a tinted moisturizer should apply effortlessly and look nice on the skin, this didn’t do it for me.

I have not tried this tinted moisturizer, but have heard some people rave about it. I love their loose setting powder though. 🙂

I just wasn’t able to make it work for me, base products are so fickle on different skin types. x
